Design and performance beyond price and expectation

"From the build quality, functionality and performance, this microwave clearly outperforms the other flatbed microwaves in this price bracket (it forms the base unit of the higher spec combi products in the same range). The spectrum of features is really impressive, and it is intelligently designed to expand your kitchen's capabilities while keeping usage of space to a minimum.

Following lots of research to identify a microwave that is affordable, well build, cleverly designed and compact, I'm pleased to have found the Hotpoint Extraspace.

The flatbed microwave may take fractionally longer to get even distribution of heat than a conventional microwave, but the flatbed system is an innovation I would not go back from. Easier clean, no wobbly turntable, better use of space.

The silicone rubber gasket in the otherwise smooth base of the microwave is a feature I would omit, although presumably it is there to seal a panel for access/installation of internal components. In any case, it does not affect cleaning or performance.

On completion of the heating programme it will beep four times, and will remain lit with the extraction fan running for 2 minutes, beeping each minute to remind you of completion. This fan is the only noise you really hear throughout operation so it could be perceived that it is still running. However the beeps are very distinct, so it really lets you know it's done! You can simply open the door and close it again to end this 'standing' cycle manually.

I've used the microwave at full power for about 30 minutes (almost continuous) for baking butternut squash, and was impressed to find the vent side (on the left ) and the top were a bit hot but not scalding to touch. The base was hot inside, which is absolutely to be expected.

While it is primarily used to reheat leftovers, warm milk etc, I'm looking forward to trying the more exotic features (such as dough proving and yoghurt making functions) when I get a chance!

As a product design engineer (and amateur chef!) I would thoroughly recommend this product."

Good microwave, annoying beeps

"This is so much better than a turn table microwave. I can fit more thing in it I don't have to battle with the turntable coming off the runners and its much easier to clean. I can fit so many more of my dishes in than previously.

Like a lot of these things, I think a lot of the programmes are a bit gimmicky and won't get used.

I've knocked off one star because you can't turn the beep off or down and it is really really annoying. "

Perfect!

"Easy to use with useful programmed settings. Easy to wipe clean, haven't needed to use the self-clean function yet. I like that it is slightly high as the door opens over a plate or breadboard you may have on the worktop in front of it."

Great Flatbed

"I have had 1 flatbed microwave and vowed never to go back to a turntable. This machine is really good! Very good value, easy to use and very big inside. I have found it easy to clean as well, which is always important for hygiene! Have only had it a week, but think I will be happy long term. "
