Big Bangs for your Buck

"Do you remember separates? The practice of stacking music systems one on top of the other in a kind of hi-fi, high rise arms race.

I was rubbish at it. I purchased a few but could never get the wiring right or really understand how they interconnected to make life (and music) better.

So I mainly just used the tape deck.

I was also pretty rubbish at the whole vinyl thing, but that was less my ineptitude and more my age. CDs first arrived just as I had a bit of pocket money spare to start buying albums and the shiny space aged discs of wonder trumped vinyl hands down for me.

Funny how the world changes isn’t it. For my sons 11th birthday all he wanted was a turntable to play vinyl on and after buying a relatively inexpensive one I thought I’d get him some speakers to enhance the tinny sound a bit.

Which is how I came across this beast. For the money the sound quality and general functionality is astonishing and it’s so compact that you wonder just how they manage to generate such a rich, deep noise in such a small space.

Add in DAB and Bluetooth and you’ve got yourself a tasty bit of kit indeed.

So after all these years it seems I’ve finally found the secret to being good at separates.

Just get one that does the lot."
