So far so good

"I've had the machine for a few weeks now, so wouldn't want to judge it properly just yet, but so far so good.

The widespread complaint about a rubbery smell seems to apply to most machines, not just this one. I didn't think it was too bad, and it seems to be a problem only at the beginning - you have to be patient with a brand new product, the smell has already reduced.

It's a very quiet machine, which is great, and the door and drum are quite large.

The eco setting that (I think) reduces the amount of water used when you press it is a good idea.

The manual ought to explain how to set the cycle so that it does not automatically move from washing to drying (I like to line dry when possible). The trick is to set the dryer dial to the sun symbol. It is a shame that the minimum drying time is 40 minutes - I wouldn't always need that much.

Another con is that some of the cycles are incredibly long, and it is not clear from the machine/dial - keep your manual handy to check the times, though to have to do this is a pain. I tend to just use the basic short cycle as a result - setting 10."

Good bit of kit

"We finally decided to get rid of our ten year old machine. We were heartily sick of its banging and bumping, and its noisy spin-cycle, which sounded like a jumbo jet revving up for take off.

Now, what a contrast! The new Hotpoint is almost silent in the wash programmes, subdued in the drying sequence, and creates hardly more than an energetic buzz when spinning. In fact I have to go back and check that it is actually washing because it is so quiet.

The controls look a little daunting at first glance, but after familiarisation it becomes obvious that they are logically laid out in a left to right sequence and are quite simple to use. It seems to perform well on the few wash programmes that we have used, and performs well as a dryer once you have decided on the drying programme that suits you best.

Capacity for both washing and tumble-drying is very generous and should be more than adequate, even for a larger family.

All in all, this seems to be an excellent piece of kit, and represents very good value for money"
