Long term ownership experience

"I bought this hob from Appliances Online at the beginning of the year (February 2010). I chose it because it’s got very clean lines, a simple touch panel interface, and loads of good reviews – mainly for the variant that doesn’t have the stainless protector strip around it. The good things first – Appliances Direct are very efficient, and offer loads of choice. The delivery service is fast, so a definite recommendation for them. The appliance itself is easy to look after, and the protector strip looks smart and makes it very hard to damage the surface – you can drag heavy cast iron pans over the hob without fear of damaging it. I would recommend this feature. The surface is very easy to clean, and always looks smart. It’s always pretty fast to heat up as well. On the negative side is the touch panel, and the way the logic has been designed by Samsung. It's very inflexible, and too intrusive. And at times it's incredibly annoying, and can stop you from doing the simplest of cooking tasks - for instance frying an egg because the shape of the frying pan isn't quite right for the hob's logic. Other issues: you can’t use big pans near the control panel because it’s very sensitive to any metallic object near it, and then goes into a kind of warning mode and starts making a rapid chiming sound. The rings are very sensitive to the size of the pans, and it you don’t position the pan perfectly on the ring the hob’s control system will simply shut the ring down without warning – and you’ll be left wondering why the saucepan’s gone cold. Or it’ll go into a kind of indeterminate state where it can’t decide whether to heat the pan or not. You also can’t safely leave pans on the unused rings while cooking on the others – a necessity if you have limited work surfaces and storage areas – typical of many small flats. Other hassles – the control area can get so hot that you can’t use the touch controls, and you have to leave the hob to cool down before trying to operate it (having turned it off at the mains). So in summary, this hob seems good at first, but after long term ownership the story is very different. I would suggest many reviews have been written by people who have, in actual fact, lived with this hob for a short period of time."
